Rufus was the son of Napoleon Bonaparte Highnote (1834 - c.1864) and Martha Woodall Highnote (1838 - c. 1864) His mother died during childbirth of a daughter. Napoleon, Martha, and the daughter were all buried in unmarked graves in Cosgrove Cemetery. Rufus is buried in an unmarked grave beside his parents.

Rufus was raised by an aunt and uncle.

Rufus was a policeman in Corsicana before the turn of the century; a city marshal in Kiefer, OK shortly after OK statehood, and special deputy sheriff in Carter Co., OK when he was killed. A very colorful character indeed!
