Mrs. Kate C. Higgins, Widow of Former New York Governor, Passes

Succumbs Friday Evening at Her Home on South Street

Mrs. Kate Corinne Higgins, widow of the late Governor Frank Wayland Higgins, passed away Friday evening at eleven-thirty o'clock, at the Higgins residence, 128 South Street. She had been in failing health for the last year.

A resident of Olean for the last fifty years, Mrs. Higgins had a large circle of friends in this city who will mourn her loss.

She was born in Rushford, N.Y., July 26, 1855, a daughter of Aaron Harrison Noble and Aldura Bell. The late Governor and Mrs. Higgins were united in marriage, June 5, 1878.

Four children had been born to this union, Orrin Thrall Higgins, who died September 12, 1912; Josephine Bell, wife of M. Emile Hovelaque of Paris, France; Frank Harrison Higgins, this city; and one son, who died in infancy.

She was active in social and charity work and was known for her many philanthropies. The latter included the gift of the home for nurses of the Higgins Memorial Hospital in 1913, in memory of her son, Orrin Thrall Higgins and the gift of the central heating plant and power house of the hospital in 1916.

Surviving Mrs. Higgins are her daughter, Mrs. M. Emile Hovelaque of Paris, France; F. Harrison Higgins, this city; her sister, Mrs. Nora B. Cameron, this city; and five grandchildren, Beatrix and Pierre Hovelaque, Paris, France; Katherine Hapgood Higgins, Lucia Cornelia Higgins, Nashville, Tenn., Frank Wayland Higgins, student at Westminster School.

Mrs. Higgins was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and a member of Olean Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.
