A viewing will be held on Thursday March 15 from 3 until 8:00 pm and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett.
Joan was born to Glenn Edward and Helen Beck Higby on September 9, 1946. Joan graduated from Borah High School and received her BA in business from the University of Maryland while living in Germany. Joan's interest in care giving was apparent from the beginning. In addition to providing care to anyone in need, she was a great planner and organizer, a trait her family always utilized to the fullest.
Joan married her high school sweetheart, Ronald W. Sproat. She worked as a legal secretary, then a travel agent, enabling Ron to attend medical school. Three children were born during this time and the entire family relocated in Germany while Ron served in the military. Joan later returned to Boise with her children.
She was working as the Advertising Director for the Statesman when she met and married Michael J. Mather. Joan and Mike moved to the Seattle area, where Joan became the Publisher of the Puyallup newspaper.
After returning to Boise, Joan went back to college and became a Registered Nurse. Her love for the elderly resulted in a move to Emmett, Idaho, as a Nursing Home Administrator.
It was in Emmett Joan met and married John Buck, her perfect match. They lived on a small ranch outside of Emmett and raised horses, mules, dogs, cats, birds, squirrels, pheasants, quail and grandchildren.
After retirement Joan skied and traveled as much as possible. Her travels included most of the US, Hawaii, Alaska, Japan, China, Canada, Mexico, Honduras, England, Scotland, Panama and she had plans to visit the Galapagos Islands with her sister, Barbara.
Joan was very active in the Gem County Board of Community Guardians for many years. She was a past member of the Emmett Rotary Club, and enjoyed the activities of the monthly book club that she recently became involved with. She loved working in her yard, garden and tending her flowers.
Joan is survived by her husband, John L. Buck, of Emmett; her two sons Bill (Donna) Sproat, of Kuna, and Steven Sproat, of Boise; one daughter, Kelly (Ron) Littlefield, of Meridian; two stepdaughters, Melissa Magorty, of Boise and Mandy Buck, of Romford, England; six grandchildren; and her dogs, Nicki, Max and Murphy. She is also survived by her brother, Glenn (Deanna) Higby, of Garden Valley, her twin sister, Jean (David) Maestas, of Hagerman, and her sister, Barbara Jackson, of Nampa; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
If any family in this day and age could be called a "clan" it is the Higby Clan, and that is largely due to Joan. We will miss her.
Memorials may be made to the Emmett Rotary Foundation 2805 W. South Slope Road Emmett, Idaho 83617, for scholarships for Emmett High School Students.
