PEORIA, IL - Deacon Earl E. Hietter, 79, of Peoria passed away at 4:55 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 25, 2008, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

He was born on May 20, 1929, in Princeville, Ill., to Leo and Catherine Wiese Hietter. He married Bonnie Dodd on July 9, 1955, in Kickapoo. She survives.

He is also survived by three daughters, Maria (Mark) Sommerville of Canton, Ill., Angela (Joe) Beeney and Lisa (Mike) Wanless, both of Washington, Ill.; three sons, Joe (Pam) Hietter of Amsterdam, Patrick (Traci) Hietter of Delavan, Ill., and Tom (Jon) Hietter of Los Angeles, Calif.; his grandchildren, Robyn, Dale, Amanda, Briana, Caitlin, Vince, Christina, John, Tommy, Lola Marie, Lila, Alli, Trinity, Gabriel, Zoe, Brandon, Corey, Billy, Sierra and Maeha; his great-grandchildren, Byron, Tyler, Michelle, Braydon, Jason, EllaMae, Anna Belle and Anthony; one sister, Rose (Bob) Koller of Peoria; and three brothers, Tom (Jean) Hietter of East Peoria, Leo Hietter of Princeville and Jim (Mary) Hietter of Washington, Ill.

He was preceded in death by one son, Bill; and one sister, Fran.

Earl was principal at Lincoln Grade School in Washington, Ill., for 27 years, retiring in 1985.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria Heights.

He also was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #6707 Third and Fourth Degree in Washington, Ill.

He was ordained a deacon on Nov. 18, 1979. He was a former member and served as deacon at St. Patrick's Church in Washington, Ill. He was very active in Cursillo, WATCH, C.E.W. and JAM.

Earl will always be remembered for leaving others laughing.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at St. Thomas Church, with Msgr. William Watson officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the church, with a prayer service at 5:45 p.m. Additional visitation will be one hour before the mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Kickapoo.

Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Augustine Manor Building Fund or a charity of the donor's choice.
