Carol was born November 18, 1951, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Leonard and Helen (Rezac) Tacke. She attended Mount Marty High School and graduated from Yankton High School. After high school, she went on to receive a degree in mathematics from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Her first job after college was with Household Finance in Omaha. She moved to a new job in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1978 with 1st National Bank of the Black Hills. In 1982, she transitioned to a new position with the same bank in Sturgis. Carol always presented an openness to new experiences and welcomed new friendships, which resulted in a life in western South Dakota surrounded by many friends.
Carol met Newt Hicks during her time spent in Sturgis and they were married in Kadoka, South Dakota on December 28, 1985. The couple moved to the home where she was raised near Utica in April 1986 and have farmed there ever since. In the same year, Carol started a new job with First Dakota National Bank in Yankton. She continued her career at First Dakota for 30 years.
Carol will always be known for her love of family and farm life, her timeless adventurous spirit and most importantly her selflessness. She always made it a point to keep in touch with both immediate and extended family and friends. Even with her selfness, giving nature, Carol did not lose sight of her top priority, her children. Carol and Newt supported them in their academics, attended all of their extra-curricular activities and taught them a strong work ethic.
Carol is survived by her husband, Newt of Utica; two sons: Nate (Kristen) Hicks of Yankton; and Matt Hicks of Norfolk, Nebraska; her daughter, Elizabeth (Jon) Graber of Freeman, South Dakota; and three sisters: Janice (Joe) Pauli of Seaside, Oregon; Barb (Mike) Veal of Davenport, Iowa; and Bernice (Grady) Crew of Philip, South Dakota.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Helen Tacke, and mother-in-law, Eunice Hicks.
