Doris Lillian Delano died on Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was a longtime resident of Los Alamos, where she and her husband raised their family of five children. She was a homemaker, artist and teacher.
Doris was born on a homestead farm in Texas County, Okla., on July 15, 1915. She grew up on a farm between Elkhart, Kan., and Guymon, Okla. and completed high school in Goodwell, Okla., in 1933. She attended Panhandle A&M College and obtained her teaching credentials in 1936. Doris taught in a one-room schoolhouse near the family farm. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Cecil Delano. They were married in 1940. In 1941, they relocated to San Antonio, Texas where their son, Gary, and daughter, Sharon were born. In early 1948, the family moved to Los Alamos, where Cecil worked at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. Her next three children, Stanley, Michael and David were born in Los Alamos. Doris worked as a substitute teacher in the Los Alamos schools for several years.
She especially loved the mountain scenery of Los Alamos and surrounding northern New Mexico. During family excursions, she extolled the beauty of the mountains and colorful aspens of the Valle Grande, which she painted in watercolors. She was founding member of the "Picnic Painters," an artists' group that still meets at the Art Center at Fuller Lodge. Her artwork has been displayed at varioius venues in Los Alamos.
Doris had a sweet loving and friendly personality. She was always supportive of her family and friends, who will remember her selfless and unbounded loyalty. She encouraged her family to be self-reliant and to develop their talents and gifts. She emphasized the values of humility, work, charity and forgiveness. Family and friends who experienced her love and friendship will miss her dearly and take comfort that she is now united with the Lord.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Sharon Mills of Colorado Springs; her sons and daughters-in-law: Gary and Carm Delano of Aptos, Calif., Stanley and Karen Delano of Robstown,Texas, Michiael and Lee Delano of Los Alamos, David and Susana Delano of Los Alamos; siblings Wanda Shores, Calvin Hicks and Merl Hicks; 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
