George Washington (GW) Hibler was born in Owensville, Gasconade County, Missouri on June 25, 1870 to Milton and Sarah Levicia Mahanay Hibler . He was the second of 4 children and the oldest son. Nancy, G W, Mary Angeline (Mollie) and William B Hibler.
On March 13, 1888, in Ellis County, Texas, George's father, Milton Hibler, a widower, married Martha "Mattie" Rebecca Poole Bates, a widow. George had been at another farm working and hadn't met her. When he arrived at his father's he met his step-mother and her daughter, Lula Bates. He and Lula fell in love and were married on January 7, 1890 in Johnson County, Texas.
George and Lula lived on the Hibler farm next to Milton and Martha in Ellis County, Texas close to Maypearl. They had 4 children: Arthur Van Cleave Hibler, Ethel Hibler Jackson Phinney Morrison, Reuel Rupert (Doc) Hibler, Odessa (Toots) Hibler Phinney.
In 1916, George and Lula and their 4 children moved to a farm outside of Denton in Denton County, Texas. On November 5, 1938, George had been plowing the field. A stranger saw him slumped over his plow and his horse standing still and went to check on him and found he'd died of apparent heart attack. George is buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Denton, Texas.
