Mary Elizabeth Blagg, 100, peacefully went home to be with her Lord Sunday morning, April 29, 2012 in Marshalltown, Iowa. Visitation will be held at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home from 9:30 to 10:30 am on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, followed immediately by the funeral service and a meal. Betty was born in Hiteman, Iowa to Newton and Laura Hibbs on July 4, 1911. She grew up in Oskaloosa and New Sharon. Betty graduated from Iowa State University during the Great Depression and taught home economics in Bagley, Clarion and Des Moines until joining the Red Cross during World War II.
After the war, she moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to teach and there married Glenn Blagg. They had 2 sons, David and James. She taught home economics at the Junior High level for 30 years. She was a faithful member of Mesa Hills Bible Church in Colorado Springs.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, David and Ralph, her sister, Virginia, and her husband, Glenn. She will be greatly missed by sons David (Diane) of Marshalltown and James (Karen) of Colorado Springs, Colorado and grandchildren Amanda, Ethan, Ben, Sara, Rachel, Rebekah, Hannah and Laura. Betty loved music and played the piano for Sunday School. She will be remembered for her quick wit, independence and love of family, God and country. Her strong values and character were very influential in her sons, grandchildren and all who knew her.
