HAYES - Carlton Wendell Heywood, 82, son of Vollie and Daisy Brown Heywood, died on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Duke University Hospital. He was a graduate of Achilles High School and attended Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School and University of Richmond. He graduated from the State Police Academy and served five years as a trooper on the Eastern Shore and in Smithfield. Carlton worked for over 50 years at Riggins Motor Company, a Ford dealership in Poquoson. He was interested in community affairs and served on Gloucester's Board of Supervisors for seven years.
Carlton was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church and served as Sunday school teacher for the Men's Bible class as well as on the Administrative Board. He was active on the district level and served as Rappahannock District Lay Speaker. He was also on the board of the Methodist Children's Home in Richmond. Carlton enjoyed membership in the Abingdon Ruritan Club. He also spent many Sunday afternoons as a docent at the Yorktown Watermen's Museum. His interest in the local waters and its history dated back to earlier summers spent on the boat with his grandfather on the Perrin River and Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. He was a World War II veteran who served in the Navy on the troop transport ship, the General W.A. Mann. He enjoyed attending many ship reunions. Carlton was married to Jean Oliver Heywood for 56 years. A Celebration of Life officiated by the Rev. Stephen Young and the Rev. Linwood Daniel was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, at Bethany United Methodist Church, Gloucester Point. Burial followed in Gloucester Point Cemetery. The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. tonight, June 2, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point and at other times at the home of Wendy and Billy Hogge, 1777 Lillaston Lane, Hayes.
