JACQUELINE McCORMICK HEYWARD, 93, of St. Simons Island, GA, formerly of Scottdale, PA died Friday, February 3, 2012 at her residence at Marsh's Edge, of St. Simons Island, GA.
She was born September 11, 1918, the daughter of the late John Brokaw and Mildred Hogg McCormick of Pittsburgh, PA. She was a graduate of Taylor Allderdice High School in
She started and headed the volunteer and Candy Striper program at Frick Hospital in Mt. Pleasant, PA in the late 1960's. She retired from Laurel Group Press as the Social Editor in 1982. After retirement, became a talented water color artist. She was a member of St. Simons Presbyterian Church and St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church of Scottdale, PA.
She was a past member of the St. Simons Women's Rotary Club, St. Simons Book Club, St. Simons Art Guild, The University Club of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Athletic Association, Sea Island Club, Pike Run Country Club, Greensburg Country Club, Pleasant Valley Country Club, and the Daughter's of the American Revolution, as a Direct Descendent of John Hart, Signer of the Declaration of Independence.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Robert Benjamin Heyward, along with her brother, John Brokaw McCormick, Jr. and her sister Barbara McCormick Tener.
She is survived by four daughters, Jacqueline Hart Heyward and Barbara Heyward Penn, both of Stahlstown, PA, Victoria Heyward Barnhart of Latrobe, PA, and Leslie Heyward Smodic of St. Simons Island, GA; and eight grandchildren, Heather Brumberger Pawelek and Leah Brumberger, Hendrick Irvin Penn V and Robert Benjamin Heyward Penn, Rhett Parshall Smodic and Hart St. Clair Smodic, Brooke Heyward Barnhart and Blaire McCormick Barnhart.
A memorial service will be held at ST. SIMONS COMMUNITY CHURCH on Saturday, February 11th, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. with a reception following the memorial service at the church. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast GA, 3836 Johnston St., Brunswick, GA 31520 or Heartland Hospice, 664 Scranton Rd., Brunswick, GA 31520.
