Angie Stamile Hess, owned Wildwood businesses

There was a time when Wildwood was the entertainment center of South Jersey, and Angie Stamile Hess was in the middle of it.
Angie owned Angie and Lloyd's Hilltop Diner and Angie's Italian Restaurant and rooming house next door on Oak Avenue.

She and her late husband were the hosts with the most when celebrities came to town. Many of the prominent entertainers of the '50s, '60s and '70s performed at the numerous nightspots in town.

"Wildwood was the Las Vegas of the East Coast," said John Girard Ricci, longtime friend and business associate. "All Atlantic City had was the 500 Club. Wildwood had five nightclubs. You could catch five name acts at one time."

Angie died Sept. 24. She was 88 and lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

John Ricci lamented that Angie wasn't able to attend the dedication of an outdoor amphitheater named for her late brother, Joseph Louis Stamile Jr., last Saturday.

Joe was a legendary figure in Wildwood. He owned nightclubs and restaurants and a hotel, and was a public-relations man who dreamed up many original ideas for promoting the city. He died in 1982.

"Joe touched so many people," John Ricci said. "Angie was looking forward to being there for the dedication ceremony. Now, I guess, she had to go to heaven to watch."

She was born in Philadelphia to Joseph Louis Stamile Sr. and the former Emelia Moccia. The family moved to Wildwood in the 1940s and opened their businesses. She and her late husband opened the diner and restaurant in the early '50s, and ran it through the '70s.

Angie was semi-retired, but she would return regularly to Wildwood to help her brother in his business ventures.

"She was a kind and loving person, like her brother Joe," Ricci said.

She is survived by two sons, Carl and Joe Hess; a daughter, Shirley Bernstein; 13 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services: Were held Friday in Florida. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon.

Donations may be made to the Joseph Louis Stamile Jr. Memorial Fund, 340 W. Rio Grande Ave., Wildwood NJ 08206. *
