Last Sunday week, Mr. Robert Herstein, a citizen of Huntsville for about 23 years, had an attack of malarial fever (as his physician, Dr. J. J. Dement, informs us) on Monte Sano, wither he and his family had gone to reside during the warm season. The fever was of a very aggravated type, and he died of it, on Friday, Sept. 20. His death caused general sorrow in this community, and he will be greatly missed. He was a man of strict business character, unquestionable integrity, and genial disposition; large hearted and liberal in his business dealings, in his benefactions and charities; a tender and affectionate husband, father and friend; an enterprising useful and horned citizen.

He was born in the the Dukedom of Hesse Darmstadt in Germany, a Hebrew by birth and in faith, zealous in the religion of his fathers and stood pre-eminent among his Hebrew brethren in this city. He founded the Hebrew congregation here and had a part of our city cemetery set apart for the Hebrew dead and was President of the Independent order of B’nai B’rith (or Children of the Covenant). He also belonged to the Orders of Masons, Odd Fellow, Knights of Pythias, Knights of Honor, Foresters, and Untied Workingmen.

There was a large attendance of sorrowing relatives and friends at his burial, on Saturday afternoon, including a procession of members of the several orders, above named.

Rabbi A. Newman read the burial service in Hebrew, and he was buried with Masonic honors also, and the other Orders bestowed their tributes of respect. Many, many friends unite in sorrow at his death, and sympathy with his family in their bereavement.
