Irving served as a Sergeant, 400th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 26, 1941 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Driver and also as Single, without dependents.

Irving was a passenger on B-24D "Battlin' Betts" #42-41099, 400th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force.

B-24D #42-41099 took off, with a crew of 4 and 5 passengers, from 5 Mile Drome (Ward Drome), National Capital District, Papua New Guinea on an engineering test flight over Fishermans Island (Daugo Island), National Capital District, Papua New Guinea. They were last heard from via a radio contact stating they were near Kekini Rocks, Redscar (Redscar Head) Central Province, Papua New Guinea. They never returned to base and were not heard from again.

Irving was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
