He was born June 20, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of Carl and Ann Marie (Shegda) Herschel.
He attended schools and graduated from high school in Newtown Square, Pa. He later graduated from Virginia Tech and also from the University of Virginia.
On Oct. 1, 1977, he married Layne Garside in Swampscott, Mass.
They resided in Wakefield, Mass., for many years before moving to Chester in 1990.
He was employed for many years as a software engineer for a computer company.
He enjoyed scuba diving, astronomy, sailing and recently, flying lessons at the Hartness Airport in Springfield.
Survivors include his wife Layne of Chester; a son Adams Carl Herschel of Tahoe City, Calif.; a daughter Leah J.H. Olave of Essex; three grandchildren; three sisters, Diane Mcready of Kutztown, Pa., Paula Morton of Geneva, Ill., and Kaky Herbertson of Lexington, Va.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Chester. The Rev. James Zuccaro, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Springfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VNA & Hospice of Southern VT and NH, PO Box 976, White River Junction, VT 05001.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
