Our hearts were saddened on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, when our son, brother, nephew and friend, Mr. Christopher R. "Toolie" Herring, was called home.
Chris was born on July 9, 1993. He was home-schooled for numerous of years before entering the Petersburg Public School System to continue his education. Chris was a warm and friendly person to everyone who knew him. He enjoyed playing all sports, video games and hanging with his friends.
Chris was preceded in death by his grandmother, Catherine "Kitty" Talley.
He leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Mary "Jo Jo" Walker (Daniel); two brothers, Bryant Johnson and Michael Walker, both of Petersburg, Va.; two beautiful daughters, Nevaeh Cook and Ty'Naja Wright, both of Petersburg, Va.; a devoted uncle, Allen "Bo" Talley (Debra) of Petersburg, Va.; three aunts, Shirley "Boo Boo" Simmons and Brenda Talley, both of Petersburg, Va., and Debbie Talley of Fayetteville, N.C.; a host of cousins, LeVar, Orenthal, Keith, Steve, Danyielle and one devoted, Russia Simmons; a host of other relatives; one godsister, Taija Graves; and niece, Ayanna Wyche; and numerous friends, several devoted, Keith Walker, Jasmine Collins, MarQuesha Farrar, Terrell Taylor, David Smith and Aaron Clanton.
A funeral service for Mr. Christopher R. Herring will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, at the Chapel of J.M. Wilkerson Funeral Establishment, 102 South Ave., Petersburg, Va.; the Rev. Herbert Holly II, pastor of St. John Baptist Church, Stony Creek, Va., eulogist. Interment to follow at Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at the funeral establishment.
Honorary and active pallbearers are asked to assemble 12:30 p.m. at the funeral establishment.
The family will assemble noon at 430 Beech St., Petersburg, Va., the day of the services.

PETERSBURG - Police are investigating the shooting death of a 19-year-old man who was found mortally wounded while officers were investigating an attempted armed robbery.
Christopher Herring of Petersburg died from a gunshot wound after he was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center, according to police.
According to police, officers responded to a call of a motor vehicle accident in the 700 block of Juniper Road at about 12:19 a.m. When officers arrived there, they found the driver had struck the concrete steps of a residence. According to police, the driver said that an individual had attempted to rob him and that he accelerated in an attempt to thwart the robbery and subsequently ran into the steps.
While investigating the crash, police officers were notified of a person nearby in the 1000 block of Augusta Avenue suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the chest.
The man, identified as 19-year-old Christopher Herring of Petersburg, was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center where he later died from his injuries. Police are investigating the circumstances of his death.
Petersburg police spokeswoman Esther Hyatt said that Herring's death has not been declared a homicide and that police are still investigating to determine how he died. She said investigators are trying to determine whether the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
This is the second death investigation related to a shooting within a week for the city.
Hyatt said that police are investigating the death of 22-year-old Jamal Muhammad as a homicide.
According to police, Muhammad was responsive but uncooperative when an officer was flagged down near the intersection of Mistletoe and Harding streets Wednesday evening around 7 p.m. The victim was then transported to SRMC, where he underwent surgery but died Thursday morning.
Hyatt said that it has since been determined that Muhammad died of a gunshot wound, though initially conflicting reports indicated he suffered from either a bullet wound or puncture wound.
Muhammad is the fourth homicide for the city this year. Timothy Byrd, 52, was killed on Halifax Street on Jan. 13, and a 16-year-old was arrested in connection with the slaying. Jamarain Parham, 22, was killed on Feb. 28 in the 2800 block of Midland Road and Darrell D. Morton was arrested and charged in that killing. Carlos Manson Jr. was killed in the 1100 block of Farmer Street on April 1, and 21-year-old Cortez J. Jones was charged with first-degree murder.
Jerome McCray was sentenced to 10 years for killing Byrd after pleading guilty in a June 19 court appearance. Morton is set to appear before a judge for a pre-sentence report hearing in January 2013. Jones is set to have a preliminary hearing Nov. 9 in Petersburg General District Court.
