HASKELL — In the early morning hours of Sunday, July 17th, 2005, Dorothy Angeline Herren Brown left this world to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ. Dorothy had been suffering from an illness and for a short time had been residing at Mesa Springs Healthcare Center in Abilene. Funeral arrangements will be made through Holden-McCauley Funeral Home in Haskell, Texas.
Dorothy was born on April 30, 1917 to Robert White "Bob" Herren and Angie Vernon Herren on the family's ranch in Northwest Haskell County, an area known in the old days as "The Wild Horse Prairie), she was the descendant of early Haskell County Pioneers. Dorothy married Fred D. Brown on January 23rd, 1937 in Abilene, Texas. Fred and Dorothy were the parents of five sons, Rodney Brown of Austin, Texas, Fred D. Brown, Jr., of Tucson, Arizona, James Brown of Tyler, Texas, Paul Brown of Abilene, Texas and George Brown of Haskell, Texas. She had 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Fred D. Brown Sr., one daughter-in-law, Shelah Langston Brown, and her two brothers, C. H. "Bud" Herren and R. W. "Bob" Herren.
Dorothy was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church in Haskell, Texas. She was very active in church activities and could often be seen in the church kitchen, taking care of meals for bereaved families, or cooking for various other church functions. She was a dedicated member of the Women's Missionary Union and helped organize many Vacation Bible Schools during the summer. She also helped with the Girl's Auxiliary for many years. She also served as a Sunday school teacher for primary-age children. She was always very proud that her grandfather, S. W. (Sam) Vernon, was a founding deacon of the church.
Dorothy also served over 35 years as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, #892 in Haskell, Texas. She was a Past Worthy Matron of the chapter and her service was valued by the members of the lodge.
Dorothy was a graduate of Haskell High School and had children or grandchildren in Haskell schools for over 60 years.
Her never-ending love for family and friends will be forever missed by those left behind. may God hold her tenderly in the palm of His hand.
Funeral services will be held Today, July 19, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Haskell with Reverend Troy Culpepper officiating. Interment to follow in Willow Cemetery.
