Anna Velma Gerdes was born in Nemaha County Nebraska, April 5, 1871; was baptized in infancy by Rev. Beckman and confirmed May 6, 1888, by Rev. John Gutleben of Gage County, Nebr. She was united in marriage March 2nd, 1893, to John Herman in Marshall County , Kansas, where they made their home until March, 1912, when they moved to Nebraska.
She passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G.W. Schmitt on June 9, 1947, at Oak. She leaves to mourn her death her husband, John H. Herman of Oak, five children: Mrs. Grace Schleif of Filer, Idaho; Mrs. Mary Schmitt of Oak, Nebr.; Mrs. Ets Lutz, Jerome, Idaho; Mrs. Minnie Schleif of Portland, Oregon; and John A. Herman of Oak; one daughter, Caroline, who preceded her in death at the age of seven weeks, and 14 grandchildren, and four great grand children, and two sisters, Mrs. Eta Remmers, Herkimer, Kansas. Mrs. Emma Remmers of Bremen, Kansas; one brother, John Gerdes of Oketo, Kansas. Mrs. Herman had reached the age of 76 years, 2 months and 4 days.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the English Lutheran Church at Davenport Rev Dumler officiating.
The pallbearers were Ernest Wade, Ed Wade, John Hendershot, Claude Corman, Elmer Bauer and Howard Hansen. Interment in the Davenport Cemetery.
Out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were Dick Herman and wife of Norton, Kansas, Fred Herman and wife, Henry Herman, Annie Herman, Frank Herman, Mr. and John (NOTE: typed as written in newspaper) Remmers, all of Wymore; Mrs. Eta Remmers of Herkimer, Kansas; Mrs. Emma Remmers of Bremen, Kansas; John Gerdes of Oketo, Kansas.
