Obituary from The Independent Record 9/13/2009:

Theodore "Ted" Vincent Herbig left his halo behind on Aug. 30, 2009, and earned his wings to ascend into the glorious gates of heaven at the age of 86. Ted died of complications from a broken neck and a broken heart.

Ted was born on Dec. 12, 1922, in Los Angeles to Theodore Herbig Sr. and Dollie Allard-Herbig. He spent his youth in Southern California but migrated north to the state of Washington, where he lived in Vancouver and then Washougal.

He would often tell stories about his youth, some of which were memories about riding his bike or the many pet birds he had. As he grew up, so did his toys. He spoke of his first car, a Model A, which he purchased for $30.

He was an artist. He loved to sketch and draw. He loved working with wood. Some of his last works of art were beautiful birdhouses he built and sold.

Ted met the love of his life, June, on a blind date. They were engaged two weeks later. After Ted served a year and a half in the United States Coast Guard during World War II, they eloped on Dec.30, 1944, and were happily married for nearly 64 years. June left Ted's side May 29, 2008, to pave the path to the Kingdom of God.

Ted made a living as a salesman. He was an honorable man as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and an exceptional friend. Throughout his life he will be remembered as a great adventurer, a toymaker, a fixer of all things, and a lovable "Teddy" bear. He was a gentleman who readily made friends and kept those friendships throughout his lifetime.

Ted moved to Montana almost a year ago to be close to family during the lonelier part of his golden years. During this precious, short time, his four little great-grandsons grew fond of the man they will always remember as their "Sugarpuss."

Thanks, Grandpa, for making your last stop our best place to build lasting memories.

Ted is survived by his son, Glenn (Marsha) Herbig ; his daughter, Gayl (Mark) Kearns ; his four granddaughters, Heather (Danny) Kliewer , Hope (Jeff) Frice , Julie (Rick) Barnwell , and Shannon (Lynn) Voss; and his five wonderful great-grandchildren who kept his heart young.

You will be missed by many. Now go and be with your wife. We know you belong in the presence of the Lord.

"Oh, and guess what, Grandpa? We love you!"

"Dad, you are my hero. I will miss you. Give mom a big hug for me."

A private celebration of Ted's life will be held, just as our beloved Ted would have wanted.
