Rebecca Herbert Cary passed away at her home July 19, 2009. Beckie was born November 12, 1923, in Asheville, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Pinkney Herbert. She is preceded in death by her husband, Randolph Jefferson Cary and her brother, William Pinkney Herbert, Jr., and is survived by her brother Charles Carrington Herbert and wife Mary of Laurens, S.C.; by her two sons Randolph Jefferson Cary, Jr. and wife Trudi of Burlington, and William Pinkney Herbert Cary and wife Linda of Greensboro; by her grandchildren Randolph Jefferson Cary, III and wife Jennifer of Atlanta, Ga., David Wilson Cary of Greensboro, Rebecca Elizabeth Cary and husband Jack Mitchell of Durham, and Anna Douw Cary of Greensboro; and great-grandchildren Randolph Jefferson Cary, IV and Ann Weldon Cary.
Beckie was a free spirit and, though not always right, was never in doubt but still loved those who didn't agree with her. Her father told her she had to stay in school until accepted by a first rate college. She attended Chatham Hall until she was accepted by Smith College. Taking her father at his word, she threw her books out the dorm window and left Chatham Hall, never graduating from High School.
She met the love of her life - Randy - at a Christmas party in Richmond and announced that night she'd met the man she would marry. And they were happily married for 56 years. She traveled with him around the world as an Army wife, and had scores of extraordinary adventures, some of them actually true. She was an avid bridge player and at various times had been a concert pianist, an accomplished painter, and a prize-winning floral arranger. In recent years, she was devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved her time with them.
Her ashes will be interred with her husband Randy at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined. A memorial service will be held in the Fellowship Hall at Arbor Acres in Winston-Salem on Wednesday, July 22 at 2:00 p.m. after which the family will receive friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice (1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, N.C., 28401) where Beckie and Randy had volunteered and who cared for Randy in his last days.
