Funeral service for Mrs. Josephine Hepworth were held at two thirty o'clock Friday afternoon at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. C. P. Broadfoot, and burial was in the Burlingame Cemetery.
Mrs. Josephine Lewellyn Hepworth, 85, daughter of Benjamin F. Lewellyn and Evelyn Sinclair Lewellyn, died at her home in Burlingame Wednesday afternoon. She was born at Lockport, N.Y., May 14, 1845, and while still a child moved with her parents to Albion, Michigan, where she completed her education at Albion College and later taught school. Later she move to Cassapolis, Michigan.
She was married to Samuel Holliwood Hepworth on January 2nd, 1870 at Volina, Michigan, by Rev. John Kirby, a brother of the late Peter Kirby, who one of the pioneer settlers of Burlingame.
In 1876, Mrs. Hepworth came with her husband to Osage County, Kansas, settling near Burlingame, which has been her home since.
Early in her life she united with the Baptist church, but joined the Methodist church upon arriving at Burlingame. Her unselfish devotion to her family, her friends, and the community won for her the love and esteem of all who knew her. For many years she was a member of the Woman's Relief Corps of Burlingame and after failing strength and ill health prevented her from her accustomed activities, she kept up her membership and her interest in its work.
Mrs. Hepworth had remarkable vitality and although in failing health during the past year or more, she continued to manage her home and was able to be about the house until three weeks before her death.
She is survived by six children, L. G. Hepworth, of Kansas City; C. H. Hepworth, vice principal of Topeka High School; Mrs. Nicholas G. Bird, Wichita; Miss Marion M. Hepworth of the University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho; Miss Cora C. Hepworth of the home address; R. G. Hepworth, Lyndon; 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, all of whom were present at her funeral.
