James Loyd Hensley, 95, died Saturday, June 21, 2003, in Franklin. He was a resident of Franklin.

He was born Nov. 15, 1907, in Trafalgar. His parents were Len and Ruth (Utterback) Hensley. He married Thelma Jennessee (Fults) Hensley on Dec. 23, 1935. She preceded him in death Jan. 13, 2001. Survivors include a daughter, Charlotte Walters of Franklin; a granddaughter, Vicki Allen of Carmel; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Hensley; a sister, Gladys Stine; and a great-granddaughter, Taylor Elizabeth Allen.

He was a 1926 graduate of Nineveh High School and a 1934 graduate of Central Normal College.

He taught all eight grades at both Russell School in Edinburgh, and the No. 5 School in Hensley Township. Beginning in 1929, he taught at Hopewell School and coached basketball. He was principal of Hopewell Elementary School, from 1952 to 1973.

He was a member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church since 1938, where he was an elder and taught Sunday school for 25 years. He was a member of Nineveh Masonic Lodge F&AM as well as the Lions Club, where he served as president and vice president and was recording secretary for 22 years and served on the Camp Woodsmoke Board. He was a member of the National Education Association; Retired Teachers Association, where he served as president for four years; Johnson County Retired Teachers Association, where he served as president; and County Principals Association, where he served as an officer. He served on the Tax Review Board and as president of the American Little League. He was the official scorekeeper for Johnson County Tourney and sectional tournaments for 30 years.

Services were entrusted to Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home of Franklin, Indiana.
