Funeral for Irene Stapleton Askew, 98, Lawton, will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday 14 December, at Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth E. Hayes, pastor, Jefferson Baptist Church, officiating.
Mrs. Askew died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at a local care center.
Burial will be at Highland Cemetery.
She was born March 9, 1906, in Arlington, Texas, to William Patrick and Frances Aldora Carter Hennessee.
She married Jesse Stapleton on Oct. 11, 1924, in Lawton. He died Nov. 7, 1948. She married William H. "Bill" Askew in Lawton on May 5, 1951. He died March 18, 1974. She was employed at Southwestern Medical Center from 1962 until 1969. She was a member of Jefferson Baptist Church, a Sunday school teacher and was the president of the Women's Missionary Group.
Survivors include four sons: W. P. Stapleton, Lawton; Marvin Stapleton and his wife Hazel, Columbia, S.C.; James Stapleton and his wife Eula, Abernathy, Texas; and Melvin Stapleton and his wife Barbara, Lawton; two stepchildren: Mary Doye, Lawton; and Audrey Smith, New Bern, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first and second husbands; two sons: Ralph and Larry Stapleton; two brothers: George and Claude Hennessee: and five sisters: Agnes Collins, Ona Elrod Skinner, Lula Cooper, Johnie McAlister and Thelma Pettijohn.
