A civil engineer, Gen. Hendrickson, 7008 Sandell Av., Edina, was district sales manager for Bethlehem Steel Co. in St. Paul. He had been with the firm since 1927. He was the first commanding general of the 47th Viking Division from its formation in 1946 until 1954, when he retired. Gen. Hendrickson enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard in 1916 and served as an artillery officer in France in World War I. He was chief of staff of the 34th Division throughout the North African and Italian campaigns and later was appointed chief of staff of the IX Army Corps in occupied Japan at the end of World War II. The 34th Division was the Minnesota and Iowa National Guard Division before World War II. During the Korean War he served with the 24th Division and with the 47th Division at Camp Rucker, Ala.
Born in Rushford, Minn., Gen Hendrickson attended Minneapolis South High School and the University of Minnesota. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; two sons, Norman E. Jr., Minneapolis, and William R., with the Army in Greece; three daughters, Mrs. Carol (Bruce) Pazandak, Minneapolis, Mrs. Francis (John) Gabos, Saginaw, Mich., and Mrs. Alice (John) Fisher, Paris, France; his ;mother , Mrs. Augusta L. Hendrickson, Detroit, Mich., and two sisters, Dr. Esther Dale, Detroit, Mich., and Sylvia H. Whitman, Bridgeport, Conn.
