Edwin E. "Chick" Hendley Sr., 82, of Panama City, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006, at a local health-care facility. Chick was born Sept. 22, 1924. He was a resident of this area for 81 years, moving here from Pansey, Ala. Chick was employed as director of Bay County Mosquito Control for 26 years. He was a past employee of the Panama City Police Department and was the first motorcycle officer for four years. Chick served six years with the U.S. Navy as a torpedo man, served in World War II, and was a rescue diver on the USS Grady destroyer escort. He was a member of Shaddai Shrine, Bay Lodge 337, Scottish Rite, American Legion Post 66 and served as the Bay County fair director for 35 years. He was a member of Central Baptist Church for 50 years. Chick is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Hartzog Hendley of Panama City; daughter, June Hicks Ard (Tom) of Panama City; sons, Mahlon Hendley (Cindy) of Panama City, and Billy Hicks of Crawfordville, Fla.; daughtersin-law, Barbara Bryant Hendley of Panama City, and Vivian Hicks Lobaugh of Dothan, Ala.; 10 grandchildren, Tina Hicks Brooks, James Hicks, Kevin Hicks, Michele Ard Nix, Stephanie Hendley, Heather Hendley Herring, Laci Hendley Logue, Whitni Hendley, Ashli Hendley and Haeli Hendley; and 11 great-grandchildren. Chick was preceded in death by two sons, Edwin E. Hendley Jr. and Jimmy L. Hicks. Funeral services for Edwin will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at the Kent-Forest Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Barton officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers include deacons of Central Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers include members of the Central Panhandle Fair in Bay County.
