John A. Hendershot Jr., 81, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, in a local nursing home.
Hendershot was born Nov. 21, 1920, to John and Esta Hendershot.
He graduated from Bowlegs High School in 1938 and went on to attend business college in Oklahoma City. After completing business college, he worked for Miller Jackson (in what is now Bricktown) until the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
In January 1942, Hendershot enlisted in the U.S. Navy in San Francisco, Calif., and was stationed there for a time. He moved on to submarine service and was stationed in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific. He was discharged in October 1945 and returned to work in California.
In 1975, he and his wife Audrey moved to Shawnee, where they built a plant to work at improving and expanding the use of flexible membrane liners in oil and related industries. He retired in the mid-90s.
He was involved in the Masonic Lodge in Clair, Mich., and the American Legion in Shawnee.
Hendershot was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Virginia; and his brother, Vernon.
Survivors include his wife Audrey; two brothers, James R. Hendershot, Anchorage, Alaska, and Earl Hendershot, Lake Michigan; his former wife's son, Tom Hendershot, DeQueen, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Resthaven Mausoleum. The Rev. Marvin Honaker officiated.
Arrangements were under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
