RUTLAND TOWN - Naomi Nancy Wheeler Hendee, 87, of Rutland Town, died Wed., April 27, 2011, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

She was born on July 22, 1923, in Chittenden, the daughter of Clinton and Elizabeth (Larma) Wheeler.

The family moved to the Mill Village area of Rutland Town, where her father was a blacksmith/horse trainer.

Mrs. Hendee graduated from Rutland Town schools and then Rutland High School. After graduation, she was employed by Brown's Cleaners as a bookkeeper.

She married Calvin T. Hendee of Pittsford on Sept. 26, 1948, at Brandon Congregational Church. They settled in Mill Village, where Mr. Hendee had a garage and trucking business on the site of the old blacksmith shop. This became Hendee's Garage and Body Shop, which the two sons later joined, and is still operating today.

Although Naomi was a stay-at-home mom, she worked suppers, craft fairs, receptions and almost anything put on by Grace Congregational UCC and Mill Village Chapel. She was a member and officer of the Cheney Hill PTA and homeroom mother at Rutland Town Schools for her two sons, from 1962-1977. Mrs. Hendee enjoyed Fortnightly, Senior Trips, Hexagon Club and her yard full of wildlife. There was always time to cut flannel for layettes and cloth for tote bags for the Material Aid Society. Her buddy, Harry Whitford, would get it all mailed for a mince pie!

Naomi learned sports via the teams of granddaughters, Danielle and Tiffany, and grandson, Shawn. She loved to hear of their accomplishments, travels and awards. Her great-granddaughter, Michelle, gave her many special times and play dates.

A best-known tradition began in 1950 when she made lunches for her husband, Ted, although he might add a friend or co-worker from time to time. Then they had two sons who would bring their friends. Whoever was around the garage at noon may have ended up at the lunch table, sharing news, jokes and nonsense. Sometimes she wanted to skin them for no notice, but really loved this tradition that continued for 61 years.

Survivors include her son, Daniel and his wife Shelly; granddaughter, Danielle; daughter, Donna and her traveling buddies; grandson, Shawn and his wife Allison; great-granddaughter, Michelle; sister, Margaret; Tiffany and Jean Foley and extended families in the Pittsford area.

She was predeceased by her parents; siblings, Earline, Virginia, Merle and Lawrence; a niece, Martha; a nephew, John; a son, Kevin; and her husband, Ted.

Calling hours will be Sat., April 30, 2011, from 5-7 p.m. at the Tossing Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be Mon., May 2, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Grace Congregational UCC. Burial will follow in the Cheney Hill Cemetery, Pinnacle Ridge Road, Rutland Town.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Rutland County Humane Society, 765 Stevens Rd., Pittsford, VT 05763.

The Tossing Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
