Garnet H. Bates, 98, of Stevensville, died on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at her home. She was born on Jan. 18, 1912, in Ogle County, Ill., a daughter of the late Aden and Edith FOSTER Heller. On May 14, 1930, she married Walter E. Bates. Garnet and Walter made their home in Stevensville, and had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 1990. In October 1975, she retired as a rural mail carrier, giving more than 36 years of service. She was a member of the Stevensville Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was a charter member of LeRaysville Chapter No. 498, Order of the Eastern Star, and served as Worthy Matron 1964-1965. She was a member of the board of elections in Stevensville, the Stevensville Community Club, and was very active in her community. she enjoyed her time spent gardening, planting flowers, crocheting, knitting, sewing and cake making. She leaves surviving: her daughters, Janet (James) Mosier of Mendota, Va., and Joan Miller of Towanda, Pa.; a brother, Rex D. Heller of Zephyr Hills, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Myra (Joseph) Taylor of Waverly, N.Y.; grandchildren, Kathleen (Kevin) Maggio of Bristol, Va., Roselee Mosier of Montclair, N.J., Scott (Gina) Mosier of Woodinville, Wash., Ross (Robyn) Mosier of Grantville, Utah, Michele (Daniel) Gilbert of Poolesville, Md., Kelly Cordi of Desert Palm, Calif., and Matthew Rogers of Bay City, Mich.; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by: a grandson, Jerry Mosier; great-grandsons Christopher Mosier and Michael Maggio; and a son-in-law, Kenneth Miller. Friends and family are invited to call from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2010, in the McHenry Funeral Home, 106 Church St., Wyalusing, Pa., and from noon until the time of the funeral service on Saturday, March 6, 2010, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 6, 2010, in the McHenry Funeral Home, Wyalusing, with the Rev. David Dewing, pastor officiating. There will be a time of fellowship at the Stevensville Community Hall. Interment will be at a later time in the Stevensville Cemetery. The family will provide flowers. Memorials may be made to the Bradford County Humane Society, P.O. Box 179, Ulster, PA 18850; a library of one's choice; The Salvation Army, 561 Broad St., Waverly, NY 14892; or a charity of one's choice, in memory of Mrs. Garnet H. Bates.
