James A Hellems was born in 1856 in Ontario, Canada. He married Anna Maria Barrett; They had nine children: James Arthur Sr, Mary Lillian Agnes, William E, Ella Gertrude, Emma, Annie, Maud, Alice, and Corp Frank J Hellems. Maud was stillborn; James died when Anna was pregnant with their last child. He was killed, 8 July 1892, aged 36, by an exploding radiator at Standard Radiator Works, where he was employed in Buffalo, New York. He was buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
"There are two Hellems buried in Forest Lawn and not a whole lot of information on them. Both are buried in a section that has lots for only one person. I think it was for people who were poor or had no family. First is a James Hellems who died July 8, 1892, age 36, section 39, lot 1776. His last adress was 233 Myrtle Street, Buffalo, New York. That really is all there is on him. Number two is Maud Hellems who died July 22, 1891, cause of death 'stillborn'. Last address was 534 Swan Street. Under parents names it just says James. Myrtle Street." --cemetery worker
