Mary Lillian Agnes Hellems was born on 15 September 1879 in Buffalo, New York, to James A Hellems and his wife Anna Maria Barrett. She was baptized on 29 September 1879 at St Brigid's Church in Buffalo; baptismal sponsors were Joseph and Julia McLaughlin. Her father died when she was thirteen years old. The 1900 US Census of Erie County, New York, lists Lillian as living at 59 Van Renssalaer with her widowed mother. She married William Shea. Lillian Hellems Shea died, 30 December 1958, aged 79, and was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Lackawanna, New York.
