Friends in Brunswick were grieved Sunday afternoon when it was learned here that Mrs. Caroline Heiman had passed away at the home of her son, W. F. Heiman in St. Louis, Friday night, January 7, 1916. Mrs. Heiman had been enjoying good health and her death was a severe shock to her family and friends.
Being in the habit of retiring early, Friday night she bade good night to her son and his wife and retired to her room about eight o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. Heiman then took a short walk, being away from the house about 15 minutes. Their sitting room joined Mrs. Heiman's room and they passed the evening until about 10:30 in the sitting room. At that time Miss Mary Heiman returned home from a church business meeting and went to the room to occupy the same bed with her foster mother, and finding everything quiet, went to bed with as little noise as possible, so as not to awaken the sleeper, but was unable to sleep. Finally about 12 o'clock she became uneasy about Mrs. Heiman and attempted to awaken her, and found she could get no response. She then called her brother and they found the spirit had taken its flight. A physician lived across the street and he was called, responding almost immediately, and upon examining the body, said Mrs. Heiman had been dead two hours or more. Her passing had been so peaceful that the family think the call must have come while she was asleep.
Mrs. Heiman was born in Andrew county, Missouri, Nov. 10, 1849, and was before her marriage Miss Caroline Roth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Roth, of Rothville, for whom the town was named. December 25, 1869 she was united in marriage to Mr. Jacob Heiman, and soon after that time they moved to Brunswick and remained here only a short time. From here they moved to Chillicothe where they remained a few years, and where in 1875 Mr. Heiman become a member of the Presbyterian church, of which she remained a faithful member until her death. However they lived in Chillicothe only a few years, returning to Brunswick and making their home here until 1910 when they moved to Kansas City, where Mr. Heiman died in June 1914. Since his death, Mrs. Heiman has divided her time between her two sons, living part of the time with Louis E. Heiman at Phoenix, Arizona, and part with W. F. Heiman in St. Louis.
Mrs. Heiman was the mother of eight children, five of whom were victims of scarlet fever in their childhood. Albert, another son died at the age of 21 years in Denver, Colorado, October 2, 1908, leaving only two sons, and a foster daughter, Louis E. Phoenix, Arizona, W. F. and Miss Mary Heiman of St. Louis. She also leaves one brother Fred Roth of Ness City, Kansas, and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Uhlinger, of St. Joseph.
Mrs. Heiman's life was one of service to her family and the cause of Christ. For 22 years before his death her husband was paralyzed and she cared for him with tender, loving ministration all those years. To the cause of Christ and his church she was ever faithful and her chief pleasure was in attending service and doing what she could to lead others in serving Jesus.
Funeral services were conducted at the home in St. Louis Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Rev. Brainerd of Grace Presbyterian church and Rev. Haskell of Hope Congregational church. Mrs. Heiman's favorite song, "Jesus is all the World to Me," was sung as a solo at her funeral, she having requested this before her death.
The body was accompanied to Brunswick Monday on Wabash train No. 9, by Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Heiman, Miss Mary Heiman and Mrs. E. J. Coady, and Louis E. Heiman arrived here Monday night from Phoenix, Arizona to attend the funeral. On arrival here the corpse was taken to the undertaking parlor of L. W. Heisel, where on Tuesday Rev. C. A. Bowles conducted funeral services, followed by interment in Elliott Grove cemetery.Aged: 66 years, 1 month, 27 days.
