Betty Louise Hefner, 90, died Monday, May 14, 2012 at a local care center. Family and friends are invited to attend a service that will be held on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. in the Breckenridge Cemetery Chapel with Charles Kuhn and Rev. Greg Porterfield officiating. Interment will follow in the Breckenridge Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home.
Betty Louise Alexander Hefner was born in Slick, Oklahoma, on July 25, 1921, to Bert and Mary (Wilkerson) Alexander. She graduated from high school in Seminole, Oklahoma. She attended Seminole Junior College for one year and then married Walter Hefner on August 22, 1940. While her husband worked in the oilfields, Betty stayed with their two children, Charlotte and Leslie. They lived in Snyder, Vernon, and Breckenridge while he worked in the oil business.
Betty had been a full time resident of Breckenridge, Texas since 1949. In the 1970's she and her husband lost everything in the flood. They then built, owned, and operated Hefner's Mesquite BBQ Restaurant west of Hubbard Lake. After retiring from the restaurant, Betty and her husband moved to an apartment in the First National Bank Building. One of Betty's joys was visiting with her friends and former customers during coffee time at the bank and coke time at the Dairy Queen.
Betty had been a member of the First Christian Church since the age of 12. She taught Sunday school and was active in many civic organizations including the Woman's Forum, Garden Club, and the Breckenridge Historical Society. She mentored students at East Ward Elementary School. One of her passions was watching football and cheering for the Dallas Cowboys.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Walter, her son, Walter Leslie Hefner, her brother, Jack Alexander, and her daughter-in-law, Cheril Hefner.
She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Louise Hefner and her husband, Larry Gardner of Alamosa, Colorado; a grandson, Corbett Hefner and wife, Heather and great-grandchildren, Casey Hefner and Lauren Hefner of Antigo, Wisconsin; a grandson, Sloan Henderson and wife, Kim from Niceville, Florida; a granddaughter, Cheri and husband Josh Kellett, and great-granddaughters, Kendal and Payton of San Antonio, Texas; and a nephew, Bobby Alexander and wife, Brenda of Woodward, Oklahoma also survive her.
The family would like to thank her close friends, the employees of First National Bank, Members of the First Christian Church, the caregivers at Villa Haven Nursing Home, the Hendrick Hospice staff, and all those who cared for her and helped her have a long and happy life.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the restoration project at First Christian Church, 101 E. Williams St.,Breckenridge, TX 76424, Breckenridge Animal Shelter or Humane Society, 601 N. DuBois Ave.,Breckenridge, TX 76424, or FISHER House (home for family of military who are hospitalized, 111 Rockville Pike Ste. 420, Rockville, MD 20850 or a charity of the donor's choice.
