Irene (Hefner) Brown-Etheredge
IRENE (HEFNER) BROWN-ETHEREDGE, 91, passed away Tuesday August 11, 2009 at Fisher County Hospital. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday August 14, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church of Rotan with Danny Cochran officiating. Burial will be Belvieu Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 Thursday at the funeral home.
Born August 1, 1918 in Hobbs Community TX, Irene was a daughter of the late Thomas Fisher and Ava (Baird) Hefner.
Irene grew up in the Hobbs Community and graduated High School her Junior Year. She attended Sul Ross University where she received a Bachelors degree in Education in only three years.
She met John Brown at the age of nine when she convinced him to sing in the quartet she played piano for. He told her he would get her back for making him sing, and he did by marrying her on June 4, 1941 in Sweetwater. They moved to League City, TX where John was stationed while serving in the Army Air Corp during WWII, later moving to Amarillo before coming back to Hobbs.
Irene taught school for thirty-two years, twenty-six of those she taught at the Hobbs Community School.
John passed away on December 25, 1968. She later married S.L. Etheredge on November 24, 1973 in Hobbs. S.L. passed away on August 19, 1993.
Irene liked to sew, feed the cows and fix fence. Her family remembers how she loved to cook and was famous for her meatballs. However, after making meatballs for so long she acquired a distaste for them. Her granddaughters have fond memories of learning how to make her version of fried pies that were actually baked.
Irene had a passion for music she played piano and loved southern gospel. Irene was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church and sang in the choir.
She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, three brothers, two of which were infants and Raymond Hefner and one sister Eula Mae Oliver.
