George L. Heaton, Sr., 75, of 109 Ridge Rd., Collinsville, died Tuesday, January 16, 1996 at Memorial Hospital, Martinsville. Born in Shell Creek, Tenn. May 16, 1920, he was a son of the late Maggie Norris and Alfred W. Heaton. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Stowers Heaton, January 7, 1996, and his sister, Orpha H. Dugger. He was retired from E.I. DuPont Co. with 30 years service as a Supervisor in the Engineering Department. A 1939 graduate of Watauga Academy, he was an active member of Smith Memorial United Methodist Church since 1963, where he had served as an adult and junior high Sunday School teacher, Administrative Board Member, and was a member of the Charles Wesley Sunday School Class. He was a member of Piedmont Masonic Lodge #132 A.F. & A.M., member and Past President of Patrick Henry Rose Society, the American Rose Society and was designated a Life Consulting Rosarian and an accredited Rose Judge. He was very involved in the Boy Scouts of America, Blue Ridge Mountains Council as a Scoutmaster and Adult Leader for 25 years, receiving various awards, including the Wood Badge Award in 1971 and the Silver Beaver Award (Scouting's highest) in 1977. In 1993, he received the Flame and Cross Award, the United Methodist Church's highest honor for Scouting involvement. Surviving are a daughter, Joy Heaton Taylor of Winterville, N.C.; two sons, George L. Heaton Jr. of Clearwater, Fla. and Larry A. Heaton of Collinsville; four grandchildren, Daniel G. Heaton and Matt Heaton of Collinsville, Ginny Taylor and Thomas Taylor of Winterville, N.C. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Smith Memorial United Methodist Church, with Dr. Ralph Satter officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m. prior to the service. A private interment will be held in Roselawn Burial Park, Martinsville.Collins Funeral Services, Bassett, is handling arrangements.
