Mary Mildred Kays was the daughter of William Kays born 7 Dec 1782 Barren Co KY who had married 10 Feb 1805 in Barren Co KY, Elizabeth Dickerson b. 30 Jan 1783 Barren Co. KY. The Kays family were among some of the very earliest settlers to Benton Co. MO. William Kays was mentioned as having built the first mill on the Osage River, a little above Turkey Creek. One researcher says the Kays family lived on Turkey Creek and that William died 11 July 1854 in Benton Co MO and that his wife Elizabeth died about 1823. Daughter Mary Mildred Kays married 25 May 1840 Reverend Stephen Preston Heath, a minister with the early Methodist Episcopal Church who had settled into Tom Twp, Benton Co MO in 1839 when his large extended Heath family migrated from Cabell Co WV. Together, Stephen and Mary had four children before Mary (Kays) Heath died in 1848. She 'may' have died as a result of childbirth or complications thereof as there was also a son, James F. Heath, born in 1848. This young son showed on the 1850 census in Andrew Co MO, and then never again. Where he and his mother were buried is a mystery. The dam renovations in Benton Co MO required many of the graves to be reinterred elsewhere. Many, which were deteriorated, unable to be located under brush, or buried by water, were lost. I 'placed' her with this memorial in Turkey Creek Cemetery but there is NO MARKER for her there and no transcription saying she was buried there. Other Kays family members were reinterred in this cemetery so it made sense to do so to further their research.

What is known about her early life is that she lived during a time of great beginnings for Benton Co. MO. Rev Stephen Preston Heath and she owned adjacent large pieces of land to his two brothers, Rev. Jonas Blue Heath Sr and Richard Blue Heath, about 5 mi outside of Warsaw. Her husband Rev Stephen Preston Heath remarried 29 June 1848 in Platte Co MO Martha Jane Moore, the daughter of Elijah Moore b. 1794 d. 1851 Platte Co. MO. The marriage was performed by another brother also a minister with the Methodist Episcopal Church, Rev. John Wesley Heath. It appeared to me that since a child was born in 1848, first wife died in 1848, that Martha Jane Moore and Rev. Heath married quickly in order for her to care for as stepmother, the infant and other young children in the home, although the infant does not appear to have survived.
