NEW BERN - Julia Heath Gault, age 101, died on February 10, 2011, at Two Rivers Healthcare Center-Neuse Campus in New Bern. She was one of 10 children born to Charlie and Rosa Heath of the Ernul community. She attended Ernul Elementary School and graduated from Farm Life High School in Vanceboro where she played on the girls basketball team and was on the girls track team where she won a medal in the broad jump. Julia's father was a respected community leader who was a mason, Shriner, Justice of the Peace and a Craven County Commissioner in the 1920's.
In 1929, she married Clarence L. Gault Sr. who had recently moved here from Fayetteville, TN to work at the George Ipock store in Ernul. Mr. Ipock was his brother-in-law and a Craven County Commissioner for about 30 years. After getting married, she operated the "Teacherage" in Ernul which offered single teachers and others room and board. She later worked at a sewing plant in New Bern before getting into the country store business in the 1930's. In 1941 she and her husband opened Gault's Café along U.S. 17 near Ernul which became Gault's Restaurant and Motel after WWII ended in 1945. It was one of the first motels in eastern North Carolina.

After retirement in 1959, the family moved to 4101 Country Club Road in Trent Woods where she resided until 2002 when she entered Two Rivers Heathcare Center. While at home, she was often seen riding her favorite lawnmower which she enjoyed and viewed somewhat as a hobby. Her husband died in 1965. In retirement she worked at various jobs including a county day care center, The Smart Shop, The Daisy and the New Bern Bible and Book Store. In her spare time she was a volunteer Grey Lady at Craven Regional Medical Center for 32 years, was a 50+ year member of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron in Vanceboro, was active in the New Bern Shrine Club and sang in the choir at First Presbyterian Church.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 14 at Greenleaf Memorial Cemetery in New Bern.

She is survived by a son, Clarence L. Gault Jr. and wife Carlotta W. Gault: granddaughters, Juli Gault Ewell and husband Danny Ewell and Laura Gault Beasley, all of New Bern: great-granddaughters, Caroline Swindell, Alyson Swindell and Bailey Beasley.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 13, 2011, at Pollock- Best Funerals and Cremations at 2015 Neuse Blvd., New Bern.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 1069, New Bern, NC 28563 or Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital, P. O. Drawer 490, New Bern, NC 28563.
