Barbara Braes Heater, 72, of Rock Springs passed away on March 1 at Deseret Heath Care in Saratoga. A long time resident of Rock Springs, Heater had been in ill health since May of 2012.

She was born on Jan. 14, 1941 in Rock Springs, the daughter of the late Alexander and Lucy Ward Braes.

Heater attended schools in Rock Springs and graduated in 1959. She also attended and graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1963 with a degree in education.

She married Norm Heater on Nov. 22, 1969.

She taught at Saratoga High School and Rock Springs High School, retiring in 2005. While teaching at Rock Springs High School, she was instrumental in establishing the Tiger Tots Preschool as part of the child development program at the high school.

During her employment at the high school, she never missed a day of work and was given a "perfect attendance" award upon her retirement.

Heater was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion; Jobs Daughters, Alpha Chi Omega Sorority while at the University of Wyoming and the order of Eastern Star in Rock Springs, where she served as Worthy Matron from 1980-81. She was also a member of the Past Matron's Club. She worked for many years with 4-H, serving as both a leader and a county fair judge. She also volunteered at the Episcopal Thrift Shop.

Her greatest interest was animal welfare. She loved animals of all kinds, but especially her dogs. She took in strays, bought food and fed all of the neighborhood birds, and supported the Humane Society. She also enjoyed watching professional basketball and the University of Wyoming men's and women's basketball teams.

Survivors include her husband Norm Heater of Saratoga; one daughter Alexandra Heater and husband Douglas Little of Ypsilanti, Mich.; cousins, Barbara Trumbull and husband Walter of Trustin, Calif. and Dr. Don MacMillan of Laguna Niguel, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Following cremation, memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion in Rock Springs.
