Hearst Chairman George Randolph Hearst dies
The Hearst Corporation, owner of the Houston Chronicle, announced late Monday that its chairman of the board, George Randolph Hearst Jr., has died.
In addition to chairman, Hearst, 84, was also president of The Hearst Foundation.
The Hearst Corp. says the oldest grandson of the late William Randolph Hearst died on Monday at Stanford University Medical Center in Palo Alto, Calif., of complications after a stroke.
"As chairman of the board, he brought his vast experience and wisdom to bear during a time of incredible growth and helped guide us through periods of enormous change," Frank A. Bennack Jr., executive vice chairman and chief executive officer of Hearst Corporation, said in a statement.
George Hearst had been involved with the Hearst Corporation since 1948 and served as a director for more than 53 years, the statement says.
During his career at Hearst, he served at the San Francisco Examiner, the Los Angeles Examiner, the Los Angeles Evening Herald-Express and the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. He was also vice president of Hearst Corporation and head of its real estate activities.
George Hearst was born in San Francisco on July 13, 1927. He spent nearly 10 years in the military, enlisting during World War II and serving during the Korean War.
