Mary Campbell, b.either in 1761 or (more likely) in 1767, emigrated from Ireland to America where she met and married James Hearst (1760-1806)in 1785 in Pennsylvania. They settled in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and six children were born of their union, being:
Elizabeth (1790-1840),
Mary (1792-?),
John (1794-1867),
Isabella (1791-1852),
William (1800- 1880), and
Jane (?-?)
It is sad to note that James Hearst passed from this world just 21 years after he and Mary were wed, in Oct, 1806. He was buried at the Poplar Hill Burying Ground in Perry Co., Pennsylvania. Mary Campbell Hearst was now a widow with five or six young children, the oldest being only 16 years of age. I found the 1800 Census for the James Hearst family living in Juniata Township, Cumberland County of Pennsylvania. The census was taken on Aug 4th, 1800 and the James Hearst family is on sheet 68. The only name taken was the head of the family and the rest of the family was only noted by age group. In 1800, there were 6 children in the home: 2 males under 10 yrs. (James & William), 3 females under 10 yrs. (Mary, Isabella & Jane), and 1 female between 10 and 16 yrs. (Elizabeth). Also, 1 male under age 45 (this would be James, the husband), and 1 female to age 25+ (this would be Mary, the wife). Following her husband's death, I don't know how Mary and the children were able to survive financially but they remained in Juniata Township at least through 1810 when the next census was taken on Aug 6th. In 1810, there were still 6 children in the home: 2 males between the ages of 10-16 yrs. (James & William), 1 female between the age of 11-16 yrs. (Jane), and 3 females between the age of 16-21 yrs. (Elizabeth, Mary & Isabella). Mary, their mother, was the head of the household and the census was under her name. I have not been able to locate a census for 1820 and must consider that possibly one was not taken in that year. The West was opening up, mainly due to the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, and the original colonies were crowded, with most of the land gone unless you wanted to buy it from a previous owner. However, by 1830, a new census had been taken & now some of Mary's adult children and their families were in Wheatfield, Perry County, PA. The West was opening up, though, mainly due to the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 & the many states that had been ratified after that. Ohio, Illinois and Indiana had all become states in the Union. I can only assume that they all made the move Westward to Ohio in the early 1830's, as Mary passed away on June 6th, 1834. Her son, John, (in the 1850 census), was living in Clear Creek, Ashland Co., Ohio, with his wife, Catharine (Stephens), as a farmer.
