Charleston - Robert E. Hearnes, 62 years old, of Charleston, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 1983, at MO Delta Community Hospital in Sikeston.
He was born March 24, 1921, in Moline, Ill., the son of Earle B. and Edna May Eastman Hearnes. He had lived in Charleston most of his life.
He was educated in the Charleston schools, and in 1949, graduated from the University of Texas with a B.B.A. degree. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Air Force.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Charleston.
A certified public accountant, he maintained offices in Charleston and Cape Girardeau. He was a member of the Missouri Society of CPAs, Southeast Missouri Chapter of CPAs and Beta Alpha Si, an honorary fraternity of accountants.
He had been treasurer for the city of Charleston since 1950. He also served as treasurer of the Charleston School District for 30 years.
Active in political affairs, he had served as chairman of the Mississippi County Democratic Committee since 1952, was past chairman of the 10th Democratic Congressional District. He served as Colonel under Gov. Blair, Gov. John Dalton and Gov. Hearnes.
He married the former Jean Fancher, who survives, on August 15, 1953. Other survivors include sons, Walter Sprague Hearnes, Robert E. Hearnes Jr. and Warren E. Hearnes II; brothers, Donald Hearnes and former Missouri Gov. Warren Eastman Hearnes; sister, Mrs. H. R. Eleanor Hequembourg, and two grandsons.
A daughter and one brother preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be held at the Charleston United Methodist Church Monday. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery.
