Visitation will be on Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins and Bonner Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield N.J. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 9 a.m. on Wednesday February 26 at Saint Genevieve's Roman Catholic Church in Elizabeth NJ. with interment to follow at Saint Gertrude's Cemetery, Colonia, N.J.
Katherine and her late husband, Nick, lived in Elizabeth, N.J., for many decades. Katherine had lived in Fanwood NJ for the past 2 years.
Born on April 19, 1931, in County Mayo, Ireland, Katherine was one of 13 children of James and Maryann Heaney.
She received a B.S. in Nursing from Mater Miseracordia University in Dublin Ireland in 1953. After emigrating to The United States in 1954 she settled in New York City to begin a 40 year career in nursing.
She met Nicholas P. Chopey in New York in 1955, they were married in 1959 and settled in Elizabeth where they raised four sons.
She is survived by her children, Nicholas and his wife, Bonny of Westfield; Michael and his wife, Etsuko of Honolulu HI; John and his wife, Yukie of New York City and James and his wife Caroline of Ridgewood; as well as sisters Bridget, Sheila, Una and Theresa; brothers Thomas and Michael; five grandchildren and 53 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Nick, in 2007 as well as sisters Christine and Margaret and brothers John, Andrew, James and Martin.
