Suzanne Meloche was a lively, energetic woman who loved cats, line dancing, ocean cruises and life in general.
"She was gracious and always had a kind word for everybody," said her husband of 29 years, Jim Meloche of Santa Rosa. "She was full of energy, always doing something. She wasn't one to just sit around."
The 45-year Sonoma County resident lost her 11-year battle with cancer July 27, a month shy of her 56th birthday.
Born Aug. 28, 1948, in San Francisco, she was raised in Petaluma, spending her early years on a ranch in the west Sonoma County countryside.
A 1966 graduate of Petaluma High, where she was known as Diane Susan Heaney, she later legally changed her name to Suzanne.
"I loved her wonderful gift of reaching out to people in friendship," said a high school friend, Linda Gallagher.
Meloche split her time between San Francisco and Sonoma County until a 1973 extended vacation in Hawaii, where she met and married Jim Meloche, then a Marine. They lived in his home state of Michigan where, in 1976, she was administrative assistant to the state campaign manager for former President Jimmy Carter.
They returned to Sonoma County in 1982. She made a career of working for various legal offices in Santa Rosa and San Francisco until her retirement in 2001 because of her illness.
She was also fond of animals. Using money she'd earned selling Christmas cards, she was a preteen when she bought her first horse and began activities with the Petaluma Junior Riders.
She's perhaps best remembered for her affinity for cats, since she and her husband owned and cared for more than 14 cats at various times during their marriage.
During the 1990s, she served as president of Friends of the 579th, a family support group for the National Guard unit in which her husband served from 1986 to 2004.
After her cancer diagnosis, she taught herself country line dancing. With her husband, she learned East Coast swing. They also enjoyed dancing on cruises throughout the Caribbean and the South Pacific.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Matt Meloche of Travis Air Force Base, and her mother, Marcia Heaney of Santa Rosa.
Services were Friday at Parent-Sorensen Mortuary and Crematory in Petaluma.

On a personal note, Sue also was a devotee of Vincent Van Gogh. It is interesting to note that they shared the same date at the end of their lives: July 27. Our friendship began by being seatmates on the commute buses for the round trips from Santa Rosa to San Francisco. We both worked in law offices in The City. We also shared a weekend trip to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to view a Vincent Van Gogh exhibit.
