CARLISLE Dr. E. Blaine Hays, 86, of 900 Glendale Court, died Saturday in the Leader Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was an obstetrician and gynecologist in Carlisle from 1934 to 1971; a founding fellow of the American College of Obstetrics-Gynecology; and served in World War II as commanding medical officer of hospital train units at Camp Patrick Henry, Newport News, Va. He was a graduate of Carlisle High School, Dickinson College, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School; former president of the medical staff at Carlisle Hospital; a member of the American Medical Association and Pennsylvania Medical Society; former president of the Cumberland County Medical Society; a member of the Philadelphia Obstetrics Society; and former member of the Harrisburg Academy of Medicine.
He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and former trustee; Carlisle Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow; Cumberland Star Lodge 197; St. John's Council 5; St. John's Royal Arch Chapter 171; Harrisburg Consistory; Zembo Temple, Harrisburg; Cumberland County Historical Society; Hamilton Library Association; National Sojourners, Carlisle Chapter 130; and a former member of the Board of Directors of Farmer's Trust Co..
Hays was a great-great-great-grandson of Col. Ephraim Blaine of Carlisle, who was commissary general of the Revolutionary Army.
Surviving are a son, George M., of Spring Lake Heights, N.J.; a daughter, Linda H. Carns of Carlisle; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Ewing Brothers Funeral Home. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery, Carlisle.
