James Abner Hays was born 27 May 1829 in Leitersburg, Washington Co., MD, the son of Abner Hays and Mary Anne (Polly) Leiter. James died 11 May 1897 in Leitersburg and was buried in May of 1897 in Leitersburg at the Saint Paul's Lutheran Cemetery.

James A. Hays, aged 67, died at Leitersburg on Wednesday morning at one o'clock after a very brief illness. Mr. Hays was in Hagerstown on Tuesday and seemed in his usual health until sometime during the afternoon when going up west Franklin Street, he suffered a slight stroke of paralysis, while walking along. He fell heavily upon the sidewalk and cut and bruised his face. When he reached the corner of Jonathon and Franklin Sts., he fell a second time, striking the back of his head. He was picked up and after resting a short while, was able to walk and showed no symptoms of anything very serious. He got on the Leitersburg stage at the Hoover House, soon after three o'clock, and arrived in Leitersburg about five thirty. On the way he complained of feeling very sick, and suffered considerably. Upon arriving at Leitersburg, he asked Mr. W. S. Gilbert to leave him off at the Hotel as he felt too sick to go to his home. Mr. Smith, the proprietor of the Hotel, was on the stage also, and he helped Mr. Hays to a sofa. After lying down for a short time, he received a second very severe stroke. The attendants became alarmed and summoned a physician. Little could be done to prolong life, and he sank rapidly and expired at 1 a.m. He is survived by his wife and these children: Mrs. Esta Showe, Fairplay, Md., J. W. Hays, Barton, Md., C. W. Hays, Roanoke, Va., F. T. Hays, Chicago, Ill., Miss Clara Hays, at home. Arrangement for the funeral will be made after the children arrive home. He held the office of magistrate at the time of his death. (local newspaper)
