STAUNTON — Betty Jean (Hayes) Berry, 74, widow of Lawrence Elwood Berry of 23 Plaza Apartments, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, at King's Daughters Community Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Berry was born June 12, 1938, in Lexington, a daughter of the late James Henry Hayes Sr. and Mary Belle (Toman) Hayes.
Mrs. Berry retired from the Jackson County School system in Georgia, where she had worked as a custodian. She was of Baptist faith, a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 1439 and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles Fraternal Order of Aerie 680. She enjoyed country music, dancing and motorcycle noise. Betty loved her family and her extended family of friends and their wonderful fun times together.
In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded by a brother, James Henry "Jimmy" Hayes Jr.
Survivors include three sons, Clyde L. Berry of Harrisonburg, Jason M. Berry of Talmo, Ga., and Wesley S. Berry of Greenville; a daughter, Tina Dawn Quarles of Gainesville, Ga.; a sister, Nancy H. Whitesell and her husband, "Tommy," of Staunton; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at Oaklawn Memory Gardens by Pastor Steven L. Lawhorne.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, in Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.
It is suggested those desiring make memorial contributions to Olivet Presbyterian Church, 1019 Richmond Ave., Staunton, VA 24401.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton, is in charge of her arrangements.
