Ruth Catherine Hayes, daughter of Clarence Patrick and Theresa (Grant) Hayes, was born Jan. 14, 1927 at Dubuque, Iowa. She attended St. Rafael's and Jackson Schools in Dubuque. On March 1, 1947 she married Ralph Joseph Auer in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dubuque. They had three children.
From 1927 to 1954 Ruth lived in Dubuque. In 1954 the couple moved to Postville, where they owned and operated the "Uptown Tap" from 1954 to 1978. She was a member of St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Postville.
She died Sunday, April 24, 1994 at St. Mary's Hospital at Rochester, Minnesota at age 67. A funeral mass was held Wednesday, April 27 at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Postville, Rev. Roger L. Katz officiating. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Inurnment took place at later date.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Theresa (Grant) Hayes, who died shortly after her birth, her father, who raised her, and her mother, Marjorie (Schmitz) Hayes, who raised her.
Survivors were her husband, Ralph; two daughters, Linda Holthaus and her husband Cleo of Castalia and Deanna Auer of Postville; a son, Terry Auer of Postville; three grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth (Marilyn) Hayes and Ronald (Donna) Hayes, all of Dubuque; four sisters, Patricia Gatewood and Sandra (Michael) Wagner, all of Dubuque, Sherry (Robert) Reinelt of Bonfield, Illinois, and Kathy (Thomas) Arensdorf of Eldridge; an aunt, Louise Elgin of Dubuque; and several nieces and nephews.
