Rose Mary Hayes, age 80, of Oaknoll Retirment Residence, in Iowa City and formerly of Wapello, died Friday afternoon, October 7, 2011, at the Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. The daughter of Earl C. and Alice Walberg Bennett, she was born on February 8, 1931 in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
Rose Mary graduated from Letts High School in 1949 and received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in 1951. She taught elementary school in Durant until her marriage to Elmer Hayes on February 14, 1959 at the Pleasant Grove Church, rural Columbus Junction. They farmed together near Wapello and she continued substitute teaching at Wapello. Elmer preceded her in death on October 7, 1972.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the UMW in Wapello and a member of the Goodwill Club of Toolesboro. She had been a 4-H Leader and she enjoyed sewing, quilting, traveling, gardening, and genealogy.
Her family includes two daughters, Diane & Brad Thayer and Connie & Andy Millson both of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Zachary and Gina Thayer; and a sister, Sally & Ron Carpenter of Columbus Junction. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; and a sister, Betty Barnes.
The funeral ceremony for Rose Mary Hayes will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Wapello with Rev. Pam Kranzler officiating. Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery. (bio by: No Reins)
