Dr Ephraim Patterson Hayes, a graduate of the Chicago Dental School, began his practice in Pocatello, ID. He was married 31 Oct 1889 in Boise, Ada Co, ID to divorcee Mary C "Mamie" Ford Gray, d/o Augustus Ford & Mary Elizabeth Richardson. Mamie's first husband, Howard Drakeford Gray (1846-1893), was an inmate in the Idaho Insane Asylum at Blackfoot.
The couple lived in Pocatello, ID from 1889 to 1893 and then moved to Arizona, and to Chicago, and from there to New York City. On 24 Feb 1900, Mary was murdered by Dr Hayes' associate, Frank D. Caldwell, in her room at the Endicott Hotel in Manhattan.
Dr Hayes moved back to Chicago, where a city directory showed him in practice in 1903.
