Ethel M. Gifford, 91, a third-generation native of Idaho and former longtime resident of Homedale, died on January 20, 1996, at Fallbrook, California. Ethel was born in Delamar, Idaho, to Laura Baxter Hayes and Robert Hayes, on November 25, 1904, and attended school in Delamar and Silver City. At age 19, she married Guy J. Shea of Jordan Valley, Oregon. For most of her adult life, Ethel was a 'working woman' outside the home. She worked for the Homedale post office and the IGA and Morfitt's stores. During World War II, she worked for the Office of Price Administration and Simplot's. After the death in 1948, of her husband, Guy Shea, Ethel married Robert "Bob" H. Gifford of Reynold's Creek in 1950. Upon their retirement from the Naval Ammunition Depot, in Hawthorne, Nevada, they moved to Murrieta, California. Ethel was known for her liveliness and sense of humor. She loved to dance and sing and was a published poet and avid reader and worker of crossword puzzles. She was an original and current member of Post 32, the Homedale American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by daughter, Colleen Shea Skaggs and son-in-law, Douglas Skaggs; and grandchildren, Kelly Carson Becker, Guy Shea, Kevin Shea, Shannon Shea, Erin Anderson and Tricia Heaton; and fourteen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her nephews, Dan Townsend, Don Townsend, Bill Townsend and Bob Birmingham. She was preceded in death by her sons, Brian Shea and Robert Gifford; her husband of forty-three years; sisters, Ruth Hayes Townsend and Leona Hayes Birmingham; and brothers, Clarence, Thomas, George and Cecil Hayes; a niece, Joyce Townsend Ford; and nephews, Fred and Richard Birmingham.
