One sister, Sadie Welborn, was a long-time resident of Durant. Of her nine children, five still live in Durant: Ray Welborn, Larry Welborn, David Welborn, Joan Welborn, and Sondra Mayes.

He met Martha Shipman in 1998 while on a trip with the Baptist Senior group "the Road Runners" and they were married Jan. 13, 1999 in Coalgate. He was a farmer and rancher. He worked on the Katy Railroad, Tulsa Air Craft, Fort Worth Aircraft and 20 years at the Bonham and Durant sale bans. He was well known for his hunting dogs and his love for wolf and coon hunting. He was a deacon for more than 50 years at Albany Baptist Church and currently attended Grace Baptist.
