Betty Irene Hayes passed on peacefully on July 13,2006, at the home of her daughter, Dr. Karla Hayes in Haverhill, MA, with her loving family by her side.

Betty Hayes was born in Alfred, ME on April 16, 1932 to Harold and Ethelyn Carpenter of Springvale. She had a happy childhood growing up at the family home in Deering Neighborhood with her three sisters and brother. She attended local schools and graduated from Sanford High School, class of 1949. Betty attended Gorham State Teachers College and graduated from Nasson College in Springvale in 1953.

Betty is predeceased by her first husband, a classmate at Sanford High, Gordon Webber, a pilot in the United States Air Force. He was killed in a plane crash in 1954. Her second husband, Carl Hayes, was a Sanford Police Officer and died on duty in 1962. She is also predeceased by her parents, Harold and Ethelyn Carpenter.

Betty left a son, James Webber of Shapleigh and his wife Sandy; a daughter, Karla Hayes of Haverhill, MA; a step son, Bill Hayes and his wife Sheila of Shapleigh; her sisters, Marjorie Morrison, Springvale, Eleanor Hall and brother in law Mike, Sanford; her brother, Hazen Carpenter and sister in law Connie; and sister Doris Page, Sanford. Also, three step grandchildren, two aunts, eight nieces and four nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and cousins.

Betty was a secretary at Sanford High School for many years and students still remember her fondly.

Betty was a devoted Christian Scientist and a member of the Christian Science church in Sanford where she served in many capacities, including lay Reader and Librarian in the Reading Room. She was also a member of the Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, MA.

Betty enjoyed being a member of Beta Sigma Phi, an International Women's Sorority and was recently honored by her "sisters" to receive the Golden Circle for 50 years of membership.

Living at the beach was a dream come true for Betty, when in 1999, she moved to Wells Beach, ME. Walks on the beach, bicycling along the shore, watching and photographing the beautiful sunrises and sunsets and listening to the ocean sounds brought her much joy.

Betty's love of and devotion to her children was exemplary. She dearly loved her family and her thoughtful and loving ways endear her to all of them.

A graveside service in the Oakdale Cemetery, Sanford, ME, was held.
